Busted Hats If you are interested in having a hat made, contact me by email listed below. bustedhats409@gmail.com
I started making hats by hand about 12 years ago, the first hat was for myself and then I made another hat and gave it to a friend. After that I took some time off to study the art of making hats by hand. I researched hat making and during my time of research I discovered that I needed a collection of hat blocks, hat brim flanges, leather sweatbands, vintage Grosgrain ribbon, sewing threads, needles, 100% rabbit, 100% beaver fur felt hat body blanks, a good steamiron and a good steamer for the fur felt hat bodies. I also purchased two black marble pastry boards, the pastry boards provide a nice hard smooth surface to iron wrinkles out of the fur felt hat body blanks. I do not use a sewing machine for anything when I make a hat. The fur felt is steamed and pulled over a wooden hat block, then I iron all of the wrinkles out of the hat body and the brim using a steamiron. The felt is left to dry completely, after the felt is dry, I use a little steam around the base of the crown base, then I use a tool to create a good brim break. then I cut the brim to the customer's desired brim width. All of this is just the start of making a hat. I like to work directly with the customer that wants the hat made and I ask a lot of questions to find out about the hat style and all of the colors that the customer wants for their one of a kind creation. Making a new hat could take 2 weeks or more depending on the customer's choice of rabbit or beaver felt color that they pick for their hat color. I only use 100% Rabbit or 100% Beaver for the hats that I make. I use Vintage Grosgrain Ribbon for the hat bands, however if the customer wants leather for the hat band, I will find the leather or use one that the customer has decided to use. After the hat is finished, I send photos of the hat to the customer for final approval, then after receiving payment, I put the hat in a box that is big enough for the hat and then send the hat to the customer using a shipping method that the customer has decided to use. The customer is responsible for the shipping method and cost.
